The most popular and traditional style of shutters is the colonial style. This differs from the plantation shutters that we are focused on through much of this site, but now a little more info on the colonial shutters and what it is. These shutters are generally about 3/4 inch thick and use a 1 and a 1/4 wide louvers. While there are many types of louvers that shutters are made with, the wedge has been often the favorite over the flat for some time now.

The traditional shutters, also known as we have mentioned as colonial shutters, are made in a variety of different sizes. The four panel units are probably the most popular. There are cafe shutters that only allow for covering of the lower portion of a window as well that people seem to enjoy.

Some of the other traditional shutter that people also enjoy, allow them to open the shutter from the top section as well as the bottom section. While there are many variations of the colonial shutter, there is much history as well.

The colonial or traditional shutter originated in the north eastern part of the US and ranged in popularity from Maine to New York, New jersey and beyond. These type of shutters were common place for Americans even pre-revolutionary times. So when you purchase these type of shutters just think about the history around them.
