A lot of people like frameless shutters, which means they just match up perfectly with the wall nice and flush. This is a nice clean look that is a favorite of mine as well. Most people seem to like having a nice frame though. The trim curved edges look very nice and give a Victorian like look. The trim can also be styled the way you want it as well.

Another thing about custom made wood plantation shutters are the louvers that can be up or down, and can be thin or thick. This has a very nice appearance when you are watching the sun come up or go down, and if you at are at the high point of the day when the sun is very bright, you can just tilt it right so that you can allow just enough light in.
