A lot of people would like to install their own window shutters, but are just scared sometimes to install them on their own. there is not need for you to feel this way. Putting in all different shutters can be done by a professional or a non professional. It wil just take you some effort and a little time.

The first mistake people will make when trying to install their own shutters, is to think they know better how to do this than someone else. You will need to read th instructions and the manual that the manufacturer provided if you bought your window shutters online.

Remember if you have ordered multiple shutters, then you will need to know the height and the width of each window shutter. It is usually best to line up your shutters first before trying to install them. This means labeling them by number first, then bringing them to each window. make sure positively that you have your shutters matched up correctly before installing, otherwise you will have problems.

The next step to installing your shutters, whether they be colonial shutters or plantation shutters is to know how the window will allow the shutter to fit. Wil you need to add something for the window jambs to even out? Or will you need to raise the whole shutter up a bit to cover the whole space of the opening? You wil need to pay attention to what you are doing to match them up. Remember this is not a rush to see who can get done first. So take your time and make sure that you get it right.

Interior window shutters have been made in the United states for a long time, but with the outsourcing of much work to China and other countries the making of the plantation shutter has been hurt in more than one way. The good old fashioned American shutters, have long held a heritage. They have traditionally been made in the US all the way back to the 1800’s and have had their place.

Now however plantation shutters are being made overseas. The cost is a lot lower for companies to have them massed produced and then shipped back and sold here. This is because the actual wage would be more to pay someone in the US to build and assemble them. But with this mass production has shown to come an inferior build of shutters.

The type of shotty work that can be noticed by the trained eye is a lack of sanding to perfection as well as weak louvers which can break rather quickly. It would be wise if you are considering spending a great deal on plantation shutters to consider purchasing shutter that are made in the US with a warranty to them.

The most popular and traditional style of shutters is the colonial style. This differs from the plantation shutters that we are focused on through much of this site, but now a little more info on the colonial shutters and what it is. These shutters are generally about 3/4 inch thick and use a 1 and a 1/4 wide louvers. While there are many types of louvers that shutters are made with, the wedge has been often the favorite over the flat for some time now.

The traditional shutters, also known as we have mentioned as colonial shutters, are made in a variety of different sizes. The four panel units are probably the most popular. There are cafe shutters that only allow for covering of the lower portion of a window as well that people seem to enjoy.

Some of the other traditional shutter that people also enjoy, allow them to open the shutter from the top section as well as the bottom section. While there are many variations of the colonial shutter, there is much history as well.

The colonial or traditional shutter originated in the north eastern part of the US and ranged in popularity from Maine to New York, New jersey and beyond. These type of shutters were common place for Americans even pre-revolutionary times. So when you purchase these type of shutters just think about the history around them.
